Department BSD ORT - Clinical Support About the Department The
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at
the University of Chicago consists of 22 full-time faculty members
and 14 APPs. Each faculty member brings with them expertise on a
wide variety of Orthopaedic problems including: Bone and Soft
Tissue Cancer, Bone Health and Fragility, Bone Infection Care, Foot
and Ankle Care, Fracture Care, Hand and Wrist Care, Hip Care, Knee
Care, Pediatric Orthopaedic Care, Shoulder and Elbow Care, Spine
Care and Sports Medicine. Advanced Practice Providers are an
important part of the care team and work as independent providers
as part of our subspecialty teams. Job Summary The job uses best
practices and knowledge of patients and exercises autonomous
decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of
delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family
support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and
research. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation
Medicine is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (Physician
Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) to join our
clinical team, with a focus on Orthopaedic Surgery – Trauma. This
role utilizes best practices and advanced clinical knowledge to
exercise autonomous decision-making in the assessment, diagnosis,
and initiation of delegated medical treatments for a wide variety
of musculoskeletal conditions, with particular emphasis on
trauma-related injuries. Responsibilities include evaluation,
assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of inpatient orthopaedic
trauma patients. The position emphasizes inpatient medical
management, consultation with other medical services, patient
education, wound management, safe discharges, and active
participation in multidisciplinary rounds specific to trauma and
post-operative care. Responsibilities Provides healthcare services
typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a
physician or in collaboration with a physician, with a focus on
orthopaedic trauma and surgical care. Provides support by seeing
clinic patients independently at various clinical locations,
particularly at the University of Chicago Medicine Center for Care
and Discovery in Hyde Park, with an emphasis on pre- and
post-operative trauma and orthopaedic surgery patients. Holds
independent clinics and provides care for new, return,
pre-operative, and post-operative orthopaedic trauma patients,
including fracture follow-ups and post-surgical management.
Performs in-office orthopaedic procedures such as arthrocentesis,
splinting, wound care, and other trauma-related procedures.
Provides assistance in the Operating Room during orthopaedic trauma
surgeries, including fracture fixation, joint reconstruction, and
post-operative care. Works collaboratively within the
multidisciplinary orthopaedic trauma team, using advanced clinical
skills and knowledge to provide comprehensive direct patient care
to trauma and surgical patients under the care of the University of
Chicago Medical Center. Assumes accountability for patient care,
including making clinical decisions, prescribing appropriate
medications and treatments as set forth in the delegation of
prescriptive authority, delegating tasks, and maintaining a safe
and comfortable environment for trauma patients. Collaborates with
and acts as liaison among nurses, patients, families, physicians,
and community resources for coordination of orthopaedic trauma
patient care. Selects appropriate communications approach to
achieve desired outcomes of patient care, including patient
education on fracture care, post-operative rehabilitation, and
surgical recovery. Actively pursues required knowledge and skills
for professional development, particularly in orthopaedic trauma
management and surgical procedures. Identifies and participates in
quality assurance initiatives on the orthopaedic trauma unit,
including outcomes tracking and complication reviews. May
participate in community health education focusing on injury
prevention, musculoskeletal health, and post-trauma rehabilitation.
May participate in basic science and clinical research projects
conducted by supervising physicians, including trauma registries,
surgical outcomes, and fracture management studies. May prepare
statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse
trends, and recommendations or conclusions specific to orthopaedic
trauma care. Acts as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or
off the orthopaedic trauma unit. May participate in teaching
students, residents, and other healthcare providers in techniques
and procedures unique to orthopaedic trauma and surgical settings.
Designs patient education programs that include information
required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the
benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for
the patient, family and the organization. Develops diagnostic
strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the
goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care. Has a deep
understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special
attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children,
pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and
coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications
Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university
degree from an accredited school/college. Work Experience: Minimum
requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a
combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work
experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: Current
and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration
required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the
Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois Preferred
Qualifications Education: Completion of an accredited Physician
Assistant educational program accredited by the Commission on
Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Experience: Two
or more years of clinical experience in a related area of
specialty. Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership
and teaching skills. Ability to conduct physical examinations and
health assessments. Ability to interview and obtain medical
information. Willingness to enter into written collaborative
agreement with a collaborating physician upon hire. Once licensed
and as needed, willingness to apply for a controlled substance
license and DEA number. Willingness to be privileged and
credentialed through UCM Medical Staff Office prior to start date.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.

Certifications for Advanced Practice Nurse: Current Advanced
Practice Nurse (APN) license in the State of Illinois or
eligibility to receive by start date. Current Registered Nurse (RN)
license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start
date. Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant: Current
Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois
or eligibility to receive by start date. Certification from the
National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants
(NCCPA) by start date. Preferred Competencies Clinical Skills and
Patient Care: Demonstrated clinical competency with effective
leadership and teaching skills. Ability to conduct physical
examinations and perform health assessments. Ability to interview
patients and obtain accurate medical information. Ability to
provide direct patient care in a professional, respectful, and
compassionate manner. Knowledge of basic medical terminology and
clinical practices. Ability to perform detailed work and manage
multiple concurrent tasks, including with occasional interruptions.
Communication and Collaboration: Demonstrated strong written and

ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Ability to act as a resource for colleagues and participate in
teaching and mentorship. Organization and Problem-Solving: Strong
organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated
problem-solving skills and ability to exercise discretion and
confidentiality when handling sensitive information. Strong
analytical skills to assess situations and implement solutions
efficiently. Professional Requirements and Compliance: Willingness

Working Conditions Clinical setting. Requires standing, walking,
and occasional lifting during patient assessments, procedures, and
operating room assistance. May require participation in on-call or
after-hours coverage depending on clinical service needs. Regular
use of computers, electronic health records, and other medical
equipment for documentation and patient care. Occasional travel
between clinical sites (e.g., Hyde Park and Orland Park locations).
May be required to staff evening clinics in Orland Park, and/or
inpatient/OR coverage at CCD in Hyde Park. Application Documents
