Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott's diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.Our location in Gurnee, IL currently has an opportunity for a Principal Scientist within our Toxicology business unit. This scientist will provide development leadership for multiple lab developed tests (LDT) and serve as subject matter expert on chemistry and immunoassay instrument platforms. They will execute experiments to meet project commitments in compliance with applicable procedures; regulations and standards and provide training to Clinical Laboratory Scientists. This role sits in our Rapid Diagnostics Division, and Toxicology Business Unit.WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Designs and executes experiments for LDT development, applies knowledge of instrument platform to adjust assay file parameters to achieve desired results.
  • Analyzes data from multiple experiments, formulates conclusions and determines future experiments. Integrates data and identifies critical process variables.
  • Able to solve a range of straightforward problems and analyze possible solutions using standard procedures
  • May contribute to developing study related materials and assist with writing reports. May also assist with the oversight of vendors.
  • Presents scientific observations to others, directs and trains lower-level scientists. Provides consultation to others on technical issues.
  • Anticipates, recognizes, and resolves technical problems,
  • Appropriately documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines.
  • Facilitates the development of pre-feasibility, feasibility and test validation timelines in coordination with the Lead Scientist and other team members.
  • Supports required clinical studies as needed (e.g. clinical co-relation studies for the newly developed tests).
  • Ensures the clinical studies adhere to the assigned protocol and all applicable regulatory standards. Notify appropriate study management when concerns exist.
  • Trains internal clinical laboratory professionals to ensure compliance with established protocols.
  • Accountable for development of LDTs for clinical markers within the scope of the project.
  • Accountable for scheduled completion dates. Accountable for early identification of issues or risks to projects and plans for resolution. Responsible for mentoring; training and cross-training of others within the organization.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING
    • PhD with 4 years of experience or B.S in biological or physical sciences with 10 + years of progressively responsible positions in a research development environment.
    • Experience in clinical test development in a clinical research environment or a research laboratory with automated IVD assay/instrument experience, including data analysis, interpretation and management presentation experience.
    • 4+ years research experience on Alinity ci platforms (Chemistry / Immunoassay test methods)
    • Must have demonstrated strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, presentation, analytical, organizational skills, and the ability to interpret study data, to meet deadlines as well as the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees.
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook programs and relevant clinical applications.
      • Experience writing technical reports, presenting results and working with electronic document management systems
